Our History

On Thanksgiving in 1967, Jack Briscoe prepared his business for its first day of operation.

With a $1,500 loan from his uncle Hugh he established the Briscoe Oil Company at 720 South Locust Street offering oil, gasoline, and flat repair service. Gasoline sold for 19.9 cents per gallon. An automobile flat would set somebody back $1.50 and a truck flat cost $5 for repair. Jack says “In those days, our goal was to clear $20 a day.”
Besides Jack, the always open station had a single daytime employee and also a night man. In 1968, Jack expanded the business by offering nighttime service calls. He did the on-site tire repairs himself–all night, every night. When would he sleep? “I’d catch a nap here and there whenever I could,” said Jack. “At that time, the City of Denton was constructing University Drive and Carroll Boulevard and the universities were enlarging. I would go out and fix the flats on the big machines after sundown while they weren’t working.”

In 1975, Briscoe Tire, Inc. moved to its current location at the corner of Eagle Drive and South Elm Street. The company built a 6-bay garage in 1986 to augment the 1940′s-era building (originally the Texan Café). Briscoe Tire used the original for over 20 years until 1996 when the old Texan Café building gave way to expansion as the company added two oversize bays and a completely rebuilt office and showroom.

Today, Denton-area businesses and residents depend on Briscoe Tire for all sizes of tire and undercarriage service. In the care of Jack’s nephew Dwayne Waters, Briscoe Tire continues to provide fast, friendly, and expert service to the greater Denton community.
